When the history of the last 100 years is written, one woman will stand out among all the rest for having risen from the most dire of circumstances to inspire the world in the most amazing of ways: Maya Angelou. Raped by her mother’s boyfriend at age 8, she became mute for five years. Then despite this life-altering experience and with no formal education – but through sheer force of will – she transformed her pain into hope, and a frightened, muted girl into one of the most celebrated voices of the 20th and early 21st centuries. No other woman has been more celebrated, more honored, or more loved over the past 100 years.
Now, with this play with music, we bring Maya Angelou and her wisdom back to the stage. Intended for both Maya’s legions of global followers, as well as an introduction to a new generation of fans poised to continue her legacy of empowerment, this ensemble production and showcase for an A-List actress and director brings the audience on a sweeping emotional journey from the depths of despair to the podium of a president’s inauguration, and beyond… all the while inspiring the audience to find their voices to serve justice and live a life of love for the betterment of all.
Phenomenal Woman, Maya Angelou, the first and only estate-authorized stage production on the life of legendary poet, best-selling author, and civil rights activist Maya Angelou, is a show bringing back the transcendent power of this beloved icon for right now, with a message for all time.
